Abstract

With massive use of the natural resources, it results in serious problems we have to face such as global warming, environmental pollution and energy crisis. Hybrid Electrical Vehicle assembled with lead-acid battery is able to avoid such problems in some extent. However, its low specific energy and serious sulfation on cathode lead to a poor cycling life. Adding carbon additives into the negative materials can effectively prevent the formation of non-conductive sulfate crystals. The three-dimensional graphene-like material can satisfy the requirements of large current charge and discharge as well as high storage capacity.

In this study, we add 3-D graphene-like material into the negative materials of lead-acid batteries by different weight ratios. The cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic polarization are used to observe the electrochemical changes in the negative materials of lead-acid batteries with 3-D graphene-like carbon. In order to compare with the electrochemical performance of the negative materials with 3-D graphene-like carbon, samples with activated carbon are tested in the same conditions. In the electrochemical test, it is aimed to explore the factors which affecting the performance of the negative materials caused by different carbon materials, different sweeping rates, and different carbon contents. The results revealed that materials with 3-D graphene-like have lower reaction overpotential compared with ones added with activated carbon or without carbon. The morphologies of the electrodes before and after the electrochemical testing are also analyzed by SEM.
